Smart Water Fund Edition 24 – January 2012
News

Dear Jennifer Gregory,

The last 12 months have been a period of significant change for the Smart Water Fund, set up in 2002 to fund and manage research and innovation on behalf of Victoria’s urban water utilities.

As we begin 2012, the Smart Water Fund looks back on a momentous year capped with the roll out of the new strategy focusing on maximising return on investment. The new Knowledge Hub was also launched as well as our relocation to a new office. During the year, the first round of funding under the new investment criteria was completed together with the completion of several innovative projects delivering great outcomes. Other significant achievements included winning the prestigious Australian Institute of Marketing 'Green Marketing' award.

The Smart Water Fund is achieving further milestones in becoming Victoria’s flagship centre for funding and managing industry-led research and innovation. This year, it looks forward to continuing this through taking a strategic approach to managing research investments that look at delivering returns over the short, medium, and long term to the water utilities and their customers.

We have thoroughly enjoyed working with you in 2011 and look forward to partnering again in 2012.

Regards

Christine Cussen

Evaporative cooler pilot study

An innovative study on the efficiency of evaporative coolers has been undertaken by the Australian Institute of Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH), supported by the Smart Water Fund, Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and the Plumbing Industry Commission (PIC).  Up until now, there has been no understanding or consideration about water efficiency in the installed stock of evaporative coolers in Victoria. Evaporative cooler operation is based on very simple physics and the equipment life can be up to 20 years.
